I went to a school-board meeting for the first time today—partly to support a friend and partly to satisfy my curiosity about the bureaucracy.
I’m glad I went. It was an eye-opening experience, and seeing the community step up like that moved me in ways I didn’t expect. As they spoke on behalf of my friend—a warm, vibrant woman who has dedicated decades of her life to this one community—I felt my throat get tight as I tried not to cry.
I don’t really have the words to express how beautiful it was. I know I like to call myself a writer, so I’m supposed to have the words all the time—right?—but I don’t right now. Trying to describe it feels like taking a picture of a sunset.
So, for now, I’ll sit with the sunset and leave it at this: George Bailey has nothing on her.
