It’s been a few weeks since I’ve listened to an interesting audiobook, so tonight, I took to Overdrive and looked for a new one. I found Boy Erased by Garrard Conley and looked no further.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I’ve harbored nothing but contempt for conversion therapy and all proponents of it. Still, I decided that a deeper understanding of the issue outweighed any discomfort I’d feel listening to a firsthand account. Just 50 minutes in, I’ve already learned a lot, and I appreciate Conley’s honest reflection and immersive prose.
It feels odd to say I’m enjoying a book on this subject matter, so I suppose I’ll say that I’m gaining a lot from it.
(That said, if you’re someone who has dealt with homophobia, proceed with caution. There are some parts—even in the beginning—that are hard to hear.)
