I’ve always loved studying languages. My freshman year of college, I tried to create my own “world languages” major just so I could take endless language courses.
I ended up majoring in linguistics, which I loved even more than foreign language classes. Foreign language classes are like memorizing the specs of different makes and models of cars; linguistics is figuring out how the engine—and each individual part—works.
Today, I decided to start learning Turkish on Duolingo for no reason other than interest. Realizing, through study of the basics, that Turkish seems to be a verb-final language brought me back to my days in syntax and linguistic typology classes, and that led to an even greater realization: I miss studying those subjects.
I think I need to find a way to bring linguistics back into my life. Time to search for podcasts and books!
