Today’s act of spontaneity was almost—drumroll, please—deleting this blog.
The sun retreated, and the minutes ticked by, and I had no ideas for today’s post. Then, I began to question why I even started this in the first place, so deleting seemed like the obvious answer.
I could just delete any evidence of this and then pretend I hadn’t quit anything, right?
Maybe, but here’s the thing: I’ve always had a thing about quitting. I never know when to admit defeat, and I wasn’t ready to give up on The Spontaneity Project yet—not because I think that eating a papaya is groundbreaking but rather because I need the excuse to go off autopilot at least once a day. I’m not giving up on the potential for personal growth.
I knew I needed some inspiration. For me, inspiration usually comes through either nature or words. By the time I wrote this, it was dark outside, so the very real javelina threat ruled out nature and left only one option: words.
I decided, for today’s actual act of spontaneity, I would hunt for three inspirational/interesting lines in books in my house…
- “Everyone joins a band in this life. And what you play always affects someone.” —Mitch Albom, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, page 489
- “These were the stories she had told her friends, though she framed them as entertainments and withheld the starved feelings they gave her.” —Kathleen Alcott, Infinite Home, page 34
- “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” —Annie Dillard, The Writing Life, page 32
This activity took way longer than I expected, and I made a mess of my house digging through all of my books, but it was worth it.
